How to Spot Fake Recruitment Messages: CSA Warning for Ghanaian Job Seekers

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) is warning job seekers in Ghana about fake recruitment offers sent through email, SMS, Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, and other online platforms. A 3News report published on September 27 says scammers are impersonating recruiters and institutions, and in some cases cloning legitimate websites to collect personal information.

Some messages promise high-paying or specialised roles, including security-related jobs. A familiar logo or official-looking website does not prove an offer is genuine. Scammers can copy real branding and create web pages that look convincing.

Check the offer before you respond

Look up the organisation’s recruitment information independently. Type its official website address yourself or find the careers page through a trusted source, then check whether the vacancy appears there. If you need to confirm it, use contact details published on the organisation’s official website, not a number or email address included in the message.

Treat requests for application, processing, medical, training, or placement fees as a serious warning sign. Be cautious if a recruiter pressures you to act quickly, promises guaranteed employment, or asks for your Ghana Card, passport, bank details, passwords, or one-time codes before you have verified who they are.

If a message looks suspicious

Do not click its links or forward the offer as fact. Save a screenshot or the original message, then verify the vacancy through the organisation’s official channels. The CSA advises the public to report suspicious online activity. Its reporting contacts, as listed in the 3News report, are call or text 292, WhatsApp 050 160 3111, and report@csa.gov.gh.

If you have already shared information or paid money, contact your bank or payment provider promptly and report the incident to the CSA or the Ghana Police Service Cybercrime Unit.

A few minutes spent checking the vacancy through a separate, trusted channel can help protect your money and identity while you search for work.
